May 21, 6-8pm @ Back of Beyond Books | Robyn Dabney signs her new book, “The Ascenditure”

Note: Robyn will be available to sign books from 6-8pm. There will not be a formal reading.

Robyn Dabney is an author, copyeditor, and outdoor adventure enthusiast whose favorite books span every genre. She describes her work as having something for everyone — a sprinkle of suspense, a dash of adventure, and a lot of good versus evil. She lives in Germany and maintains a home base in Moab, Utah. When she isn’t writing, Robyn talks books as a co-host of the Tipsy Nerds Book Club podcast and plays in the great outdoors (usually climbing!).

In The Ascenditure, a young adult fantasy feminist climbing tale, readers are transported into a world of perilous climbs and daring escapades, where a young female climber embarks on a journey to prove herself worthy of a coveted spot on an elite climbing team in a kingdom that relegates women to the home.

This week’s featured item from our rare department is a signed copy of Raven’s Exile by award-winning nature writer Ellen Meloy (1946-2004). It is the first printing of the Owl Book trade paperback edition and it is in very good condition with a bit of wear and toning. Raven’s Exile was Meloy’s debut title and it remains out of print and can be tricky to find, especially signed.

The book chronicles a back-country river ranger season spent rafting on the Green River. It shares Meloy’s keen observations about the region’s unspoiled beauty and the threats posed by human meddling. According to Terry Tempest Williams, “Raven’s Exile is an exuberant, smart, irreverent, and loving account of one woman bearing witness in Desolation Canyon.”

“Write for Life” by Julia Cameron

As sneaky little thoughts take lead in my head of what others might think or reject about a bookstore employee writing a review on a book that “whisks you effortlessly along a six-week writing adventure” (words spoken by Mirabai Starr, author of Wild Mercy and Caravan of No Despair) I was reminded of Julia Camerons fueling notes to just get your words out of the body and put them on paper.

Here’s to writing so vulnerably that it most certainty embarrasses the hell out of you and not listening to the gibberish of the inner voice (mine’s name is Queen Anne who I’ve pictured being a stout little woman proud of her jet-black square cut bangs and plaid pencil skirt wearing a red whistle with microphone in hand) and allowing more space for unpolished words of truth and heart to be read and felt by whomever.

My biggest takeaway from this course book is to allow your most authentic and soul flourishing expressions of self come to life on paper because that’s where the real writing begins and that’s what people want to read.

Julias guidance to begin each day by making pinky promises with pen and paper to write your morning pages has been a game changer for me! Even if you’ve been writing stream of consciousness style for years or perfecting your prose there are so many killer insights that she shares with us through her craft.
