Hampton Sides is my favorite author of narrative nonfiction and reading his 2014 book In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the U.S.S. Jeannette only solidified that opinion. It is the harrowing story of an 1879 arctic expedition that became a desperate struggle for survival after the ship was trapped in ice. The book reads almost like a novel with a captivating cast of characters and expert pacing. Both difficult to put down and informative, it provides the larger societal context without ever bogging down the thrilling tale of adventure and hardship. Sides is a fantastic storyteller and this is yet another book of his that I heartily recommend to anyone who enjoys reading about history.
