🐜 The Colony by Annika Norlin

I have always been fascinated by communal living. Could it be utopia if all the stars are in alignment? This first (and deftly translated) novel from Swedish writer, Annika Norlin, gives us a long look at how a motley group of folks coexist in a bucolic forest for many years. Through a series of flashbacks, we come to know what led each member to a life in the colony and without exception, those histories are dark. This book grapples with whether a simple, rote existence is truly a salve or if it is stagnation, avoidance and loss of self. Norlin weaves this tale with moving sensitivity and skill. The Colony is an impressive debut.
