You'll probably hate this book. We'll just get that out of the way first.
But, if You've read Moshfegh before and are going back for more, you're definitely in a better position to be receptive to Lapvona. This is an absurdist tale set in a medieval village with a cast of characters that are either deeply flawed or deeply traumatized. There is drought, starvation, death, cruelty, abuse and even a little cannibalism. That said, this is a writer at the height of her powers. This book radiates her razor-sharp dark wit and exquisite imagery. It's like nothing you've ever read. It's gross and funny and beautiful. I laughed. I winced. I cried. I hugged this book (truly). An utterly glorious delight.
