At any given moment a scene from a Thomas Pynchon novel is playing out in my brain. "Vineland," set somewhere in northern California in a very strange 1984, has a teenage girl named Prairie searching for her long-lost mother. It also has an all-female ninja commune, a punk band at a mafia wedding, a mysterious Godzilla situation, television addicts, hippies who were sixties radicals in former lives now in hiding...and, government military forces moving in against U.S. citizens. You'd be surprised what Pynchon does not make up here. This 1984 is far more prescient than Orwell's. More melancholy, more damning. Not to mention, way funnier.
