The Universe in a Single Atom by the Dalai Lama
What is the true nature of reality? What is consciousness? How did our universe and life come into being? These and many other questions are asked in the book The Universe in a Single Atom by the Dalai Lama. First published in 2005, this book holds great importance to understanding ourselves and the world we inhabit. The Dali Lama compares the insights he and others have gained through Buddhism and other spiritual/contemplative practices with our scientific, rational breakdown of reality, and how they not just complement each other but are intricate to a complete understanding of both.
Throughout the book many examples of centuries old Buddhist thought are compared with modern scientific theories. In clear, down to earth language, the Dali Lama shows how modern science is beginning to confirm many intuitive experiences and philosophies with empirical data. And when the inverse is true, he does not shy away from relinquishing old beliefs for ones in tune with modern discoveries. The book does not go into great depth in any one area but provides an easy read that will leave both the science-minded and spiritual person with a new sense of wonder about the world around us.
